Residual risk language that resists soft-pedaling
DevCloud Masters insights
Findings lose force when verbs soften: “opportunity” replaces “breach,” “ongoing improvement” replaces “unowned remediation.” Residual risk statements should name the decision being taken.
A usable pattern
State the policy expectation, the observed adherence gap, the exposure window, the compensating measures (if any), and the explicit choice: accept for a dated period, mitigate with an owner, or escalate. If a sentence cannot support that structure, it is not ready for the board pack.
Our flagship studios rehearse this pattern with peer critique so teams hear how soft language lands on skeptical listeners before it reaches executives.
